Ultima Financial Planners recently invited Ona Viljoen to do a presentation titled ‘Smart Travel’ as part of the Ultima Smart Events series. We would like to use these events to provide our clients with very useful information to enjoy a meaningful life and travel was a very popular topic. We were so overwhelmed by the response that we decided to share some of the highlights in this blog, especially the practical aspects. General Traveling Tips:
Before you book ensure the following:
- Passport must be valid for at least 6 months AFTER your return date
- There must be at least 2 blank pages
- Booking dates –take time differences into account
- Spell your names correctly!
- Check visa requirements

Tips on traveling in 3rd World Countries (Africa, India, Central & South Asia, South America)
Smart Packing
- Pack for 5 days, irrespective of how long you will be away
- Ziplock bags – different sizes
- Pack for the activities you’re planning
- A sharp knife, two spoons, two plastic plates
- Check weather at destination
- Take wire hangers (2 per person)
Clean water
- Household bleach to disinfect water
- Dropper
- 3-4 drops for one and a half litre bottle
- Let it stand for 5 minutes
- Take broad spectrum antibiotics
Rehydration mixture
- Add a half-teaspoon of table salt and 6 teaspoons of sugar into a clean container
- Add one litre of clean drinking water. If you cannot measure out a litre, add 5 cups of water (each cup is about 200 ml)
- Stir well & drink
Eating out in 3rd world countries!
- Be careful with meat – Eat at busy cafes & eateries
- Stick to warm food
- Be careful with salads
- Wash fruit
- Don’t be too fussy – try new dishes
A final word:
- Mail all e-tickets, bookings, etc. to yourself
- Make copies of your passport
- Make copies of flights/other bookings
- Take a money belt (available at Dis-Chem)
- Leave the bling at home
