Retirement. What does it mean to you?

So many people view retirement as the final step on the journey of life and it is so not the case today.  We need to view the next segment of our life with energy and vigor.

People with a positive outlook to life are expected to live an extra 7.5 years but sadly some people do not resonate with this idea and have an attitude of doom and gloom.  It is easy to slip into the mode of being tired, wanting to rest and live peacefully but I know people who have been forced into retirement after many years of work at a corporate organization and are now living a truly fulfilled life.

In order to do this one needs to view the different areas of life and evaluate them and understand if work needs to be done in one or more area of life.

  • Do you have a purpose in your life? Why do you get up every morning and what do you plan to achieve? So many people feel that after raising a family, having a successful corporate career and a busy life that they have achieved everything in life and no longer have a purpose.  It is essential to ensure you have a reason to get up and enjoy your day.
  • The most commonly considered area in the new segment is finances. Ensure that you have a recognized independent financial advisor who will guide you carefully in this area of your life. I am fortunate as I have been with Ultima Financial Planners for many years and review our profile annually to ensure we are on the right path of life.
  • Where do you want to live? Recently a friend of mine lost her husband of many years and she has much energy and life in her. She believed that the only place to go and live was in an old age home so she could be taken care of later on.  This is not everybody’s choice and care for you later in life can also mean remaining in your own home and having a career to take care of you.  It is essential to consider all your options and plan for a lifestyle that will resonate with you.
  • Do you have a social circle? This can be as big or as small as you wish it to be but you need to have people who have your interests at heart and can engage with you socially. This can be done by joining groups of people for games, sport, hobbies or it could possibly be done electronically.
  • What are your interests? This may need to be considered purely to keep you stimulated and active or you may be looking to supplement your income or earn an income. Very often our hobbies and talents can lead us down a path of a new business that not only keeps us stimulated but also brings in the necessary Rand or two.
  • Do you give back to the community? This is an essential part of anyone’s life and nobody is here to judge you on what is close to your heart but giving back is not just about giving money. Often organizations need time, commitment or items that you may be getting rid of when you de-clutter your life.  Think seriously about who you can help and give back to.
  • Do you take care of your health? Health is necessary at any stage in life but as we go forward we need to consider our health more and more because without it life will be a lot more difficult.

If you need some assistance in this area at The Orange we provide Retirement Coaching programs and would be happy to help you live your life more complete and happily.
